How Beach Volleyball Shaped My Big Island Journey

Emil’s Story: A Lifestyle Built on Sand

There’s something magical about beach volleyball on the Big Island. Hawaii hides its courts like treasures; completely different than the mainland, where clusters of sand courts are common in public parks. One here, one there—some private, some public—but each with its unique rhythm and story.

If you’re new to the island, finding a competitive game isn’t always easy. Most courts are tucked into communities, and the best matches often happen by invitation. But for those lucky enough to find their way in, the Big Island volleyball scene offers a great game and connection, a sense of belonging, and a lifestyle that few places on Earth can match.

Where It All Began…

My volleyball journey started 25 years ago, far from Hawaii, just after our move from Russia to Vancouver, Washington. The local Russian community was immersed in the sport, and it didn’t take long for me to swap my basketball shoes for indoor volleyball sneakers. I was hooked!

Volleyball became a passion that followed me through life. It’s one that gifted me lifelong friendships, incredible memories, and, admittedly, a few injuries. But, as I got more competitive, I also found that it pulled me away from family life. Leagues started late. Games ran into the night. My son and wife were often waiting at home while I chased the next match. I knew that this wasn’t going to be sustainable long-term.

Then came Hawaii.

A Shift in Pace and Priorities

When we moved to the Big Island in 2012, everything changed. I’d visited before and built a few volleyball friendships, so integrating into the island’s volleyball community came naturally. That community quickly became my anchor.

Keauhou Canoe Club’s volleyball court—hidden, peaceful, and breathtakingly beautiful—became my home base. Because there are no lights there, games naturally end by sunset. That gentle limit reshaped my routine: finish a match, jump in the ocean, and head home in time for dinner. No late nights, no long drives. Just the balance that I was never able to achieve on the mainland.

From Playing to Parenting

Perhaps the greatest gift volleyball gave me on the Big Island was time with my son.

He grew up watching me play, splashing at the edges of Keauhou Bay while I served and dove across the sand. I introduced him to the court around age 12, and by 14, he was playing some tournaments. At 16, we were partners, holding our own in doubles games. Now, at 19, he’s taller than me—and stronger. And we’re still teammates.

Those are the moments I treasure most. Win or lose, it’s a bond that money can’t buy.

Volleyball, Real Estate, and Community

My work in Hawaii real estate gave me the flexibility to build my life around both my family and my passion. I made it a point to be one of the first to set up the court and the last to leave. Eventually, I was invited to join the Keauhou Volleyball Association as a board member. I’m actively planning events, hosting tournaments, and deepening my roots in this incredible community.

Here’s something unexpected: many of my real estate clients came through the volleyball court. The shared passion for sport opened the door to genuine connection, and from that trust, business followed naturally. There’s something powerful about doing deals with people who’ve already seen you dive for the ball with everything you’ve got.

A Tour of the Kona Volleyball Scene

If you’re visiting or thinking about making the Big Island home, here’s a quick tour of our local volleyball gems:

1. Coconut Grove Plaza, Kona town

Tucked right in the heart of town, this court isn’t just a place to play—it’s the epicenter of the local volleyball community. With the only lighted court on the island, it’s where games don’t stop when the sun goes down. In fact, some of the island’s biggest tournaments spike well into the night, with the Pacific sunset and nearby restaurants setting an unbeatable scene.

At the core of it all is the Keauhou Volleyball Association (KVA), keeping the island’s volleyball spirit alive with year-round events that are as fun as they are competitive. Highlights include:

2. Magic Sands Beach

A postcard-perfect beach court open to locals and visitors alike. The vibe is relaxed—until the competitive players show up. Monthly quad tournaments bring together fun, fitness, and serious sand skills. It’s casual, social, and completely unforgettable.

3. Keauhou Canoe Club Court

A hidden gem. Nestled next to a historic canoe paddling community, this court was where my Hawaii volleyball life began. It’s more than a court – it’s a lifestyle hub, perfect for paddling, snorkeling, and, of course, volleyball.

4. Private Courts

Some of the most stunning courts are behind gates or within resort communities. One that stands out? A beachfront estate in Puako is owned by a close friend. He built a “sugar white” sand court overlooking the ocean. We’ve played countless games there, trained with some of the former and current AVP players, followed by dinners under the stars. Invite-only, of course, but unforgettable every time.

The Takeaway

If you’re still reading, you’re probably a volleyball fan or maybe the parent of one. Thank you for staying with me.

I hope this gave you a deeper look into what makes the Big Island’s beach volleyball community so special. Volleyball isn’t about just the games or the courts—it’s the people, the stories, and the life that happens between matches. Whether you’re here for a visit or considering a move, know that this is about finding your place in a community built on passion, respect, and a shared love for the ocean and the game.

If you’re heading to Kona and want to join a game or just talk real estate with a fellow volleyball lover, reach out! I’d be happy to connect.
